This technique is extremely difficult to pull off and hard to continue to do over a long band performance, but if perfected, this throaty, watery, disgusting (drain pipe) guttural makes the music so much heavier (similar to the goregrind vocals without all the stupid special effects for untalented posers). Obviously, when thinking of singing (and gutturals), you would think to exhale Knupp inhaled. Let’s not get too far off topic what made Devourment stand apart from these Long Island brutal death metallers was the new vocal style invented by Wayne Knupp. This riff was extremely popular in the Long Island and Upstate New York metal scene, with bands such as Dehumanized, Afterbirth, Pyrexia, Repudilation, and Internal Bleeding (probably the creators first true slamming brutal death metal album, but it is debated quite a bit), but still, none of these bands were considered as brutal as Devourment. The slam riff (discussed in my previous articles), has been around since 1991 when it was first introduced by Suffocation in the song “Liege of Inveracity” of their album Effigy of the Forgotten (check my other article), but there were very few bands that would use this style of riff for the entire album. This is a great album and an all around fun listen.Wayne Knupp, a vocalist for one of my favorite albums of all times (can’t say the album), and the most influential slamming brutal death metal album of all times (again, can’t say the album), by Texan slam pioneers Devourment, took the underground brutal death metal scene by storm. Instead of switching genres entirely like other metal bands, (which we will not mention) Vulvodynia manage to ride the lines of numerous extreme metal genres and they don’t care what lane they land in. Mob Justice will not appeal to everyone, but its a great example of what a band can do and what experimentation is all about. I believe this is truly where the band shines and the height of the album itself. The band switches their style significantly in this track siding more with their tech death and melodic style. More interesting is the appearance of Trevor from The Black Dahlia Murder in the track Reclaim the crown Part I. Alex Taylor Of Malevolence makes a appearance on the album to switch up the tones while other songs stay true to the gore that is slamming brutal death metal. The songs Famine and Born Into Filth contains some hardcore punk influenced vocals, a much welcomed break from the squeals and growls. But what makes the album different is their nods to other genres. Sounds of flies hovering over a dead carcass, pig squeals and guttural vocals.

This is not necessary a bad thing as it leaves room for the band to experiment. It seems as though the band are still trying to find where they fit on the spectrum and within the death metal scene. The album incorporates the usual brutal death metal while edging ever so closely to hardcore elements. South African Slammers Vulvodynia are back with their third Full length album Mob Justice.
